The Shibusawa Eiichi denki shiryo digital version and plans for a Shibusawa Eiichi archive

Shibusawa Eiichi was a key figure in the establishment of a modern economic system in Japan and the Shibusawa Eiichi Memorial Foundation is dedicated to furthering his ideals in today’s world. Eiichi’s achievements were compiled in the Shibusawa Eiichi denki shiryo (Shibusawa Eiichi Biographical Materials), a 68 volume series (58 main volumes, 10 supplementary volumes), published between 1955 and 1971 that, even today, serves as the basis for research on Eiichi and modern Japanese history.

The Information Resources Center has been working on a digitization project since 2004 with the goal of increasing the accessibility of the Denki shiryo. In 2016, the 57 main volumes excluding the index volume were made available online. In doing so the Center attempted not only to digitize the contents or upload scanned images but to recreate the Denki shiryo online in accordance with the intentions of the original print version. In my presentation I will discuss what is currently available online as well as additions we are working on including the supplementary volumes and partial English translation. I will share our goals, methods, practical operation of the website, and some of the issues confronting the project.

In addition to the digital Denki shiryo, the Center has also produced various digital resources including the Shibusawa Shashi Database (SSD), thematic resources on topics such as disaster and recovery, and information on Shibusawa Eiichi. We are currently working towards the construction of a comprehensive “Shibusawa Eiichi Archive” that would include all of these resources. I hope that this case study of one small institution’s efforts in sharing information on one historical figure will prove of interest to those involved in research on Japan around the world and that it will generate feedback that will help us improve our provision of digital resources moving forward.
